Surrender: v. to yield (something) to the possession or power of another; to give oneself up, as into the power of another; submit or yield
SYNONYMS: yield, forego, relinquish: to let go; release
Sur- “over” + rendre “give back”
Jeremiah 10:23 “O LORD, I know the way of man is not in himself; It is not in man who walks to direct his own steps.”
Surrender is not what I will, it is what He wills. Surrender is to “give back over” what was never yours to begin with. It is to relinquish control, to quiet your worried hearts and minds, to surrender the authority that has always been His, back over to Him. It is to say that you know that His way is significantly greater than yours. It is to agree that His way is the only way and to live by that.
Matthew 7:21 “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘LORD, LORD,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven.”
We must be doers of the word, and not hearers only. (James 1:22 ) We can’t fake out God, He sees what is in our hearts and He sees the evidences of our faith in our lives, you are an open book to Him. He knows your lying down and your waking up, He knows the thoughts you think and the desires of your hearts. He is good and loving and He promised to give us the desires of our hearts, and through doing so He will fulfill all our purpose! (Psalm 20:4) He knows our tendencies to feel like we need to control every aspect of our lives and to plan out our every minute. This is why He calls us to a life of surrender to Him. His yoke is easy and his burden is light, He wants the best for us. (Matthew 11:30)
It says in 1 John 3:16-24 “By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. But whoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him? My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth. And by this we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before Him. For if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and knows all things. Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence toward God. And whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do these things that are pleasing in His sight. And this is His commandment that we should believe on the name of His Son Jesus Christ and love one another, as He gave us commandment. Now he who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him. And by this we know that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us.”
“He laid down His life for us,” that was Jesus’ complete, ultimate surrender. He GAVE UP HIS LIFE, in such a painful way. We tend to take this fact for granted so often, but it is not something that should be taken lightly. We need to be constantly humbled and surrendered to Jesus, we need to read about His death and resurrection and mourn for Him, for the pain He endured on our behalf! And we must praise Him, shout His praise, lift HIGH HIS NAME. Because He is exalted, He surrendered His perfect life and gave up so much so that we could be with Him, and it is such a small thing for us to surrender our lives back into His hands. It says next that, “we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. “ That is OUR surrender, we are called to live as Christ lived, and if He was willing to give up His life for our cause then it is the least we can do, that if we say we love Him we should be willing to go as far as to give up OUR lives for His glory, for His praise, to die in the name of our perfect King. That is our Ultimate Surrender.
Another way that we can show surrender in our lives is just by loving His Creations. We are all His Creations, we are bought with a price and we need love. If we say we belong to Christ, that we love God, we need to live it. To walk worthy of His calling with which He has called us, which is found in Ephesians 4-5:2. We must learn to love outwardly, demonstrating our love towards others, if anyone has need, may we be giving them all the help we are capable of, in Jesus’ name.
Let us not be led astray by our hearts. Our hearts are deceitful above all things and desperately wicked. (Jeremiah 17:9) BUT! “I, the LORD, search the heart, I test the mind, even to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his doings.” Because God is greater than our hearts! (1 John) We cannot stray from doing good, because of condemnation, we are human and that means that we will never be wholly perfect until we are reunited with God in Heaven. We are the closest we will ever be to perfection when we are abiding in Him, when we are surrendered to Him. Our intentions will never be 100% pure, there is always a smidgen of self-exaltation or benefit in our motivation, but God has provided us with grace and mercy to cover our selfishness and known or unknown sins, bad intentions and mistakes. Jesus blood never fails me. We can have a perfect peace in Him because perfect love casts out fear and torment. He knows that we are a fallen creature, and that hard as we try we are still just sinful beings.
The Lord knows our hearts, and He blesses us when we seek Him, when we are humbled before Him, when we are surrendered to Him. “And whatever we ask we receive from Him,” He wants to bless us, He wants us to have the desires of our hearts! He promises that anything we ask in His name, He will give us! He gives us exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think when we give him our hearts, when we follow His commandments and love Him. (Ephesians 3:20) When we love God, we will love each other, but God is always first. His timing is perfect and in His perfect timing it is always the perfect time to give yourself back over to Him. Because we were all His to begin with, and we still are, whether we acknowledge it or not; “We exist for God’s Pleasure, to edify and exhort God’s people and to declare God’s plan of salvation to the world.” -Jon Corson.
What does the Lord ask of us in terms of obedience and surrendering to Him?
Isaiah 1:16-17 & 19a “Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean; Put away the evil of your doings from before My eyes. Cease to do evil. Learn to do good; Seek justice, Rebuke the oppressor, Defend the fatherless, Plead for the widow…. If you are willing and obedient.”
Micah 6:8 “He has shown you, O man, what is good; And what does the Lord require of you but to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?”
1 Thessalonians 5:11 & 16-18 “Therefore comfort each other and edify one another, just as you also are doing… Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”
1 Samuel 15:22-23 “So Samuel said: ‘Has the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold to obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed than the fat of rams. For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the LORD, He also has rejected you from being king.’”
James 4:15 “Instead you ought to say, ‘If the LORD wills, we shall live and do this or that.’”
1 Peter 5:6-7 “Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your cares upon Him for He cares for you.”
He only wants the best for us and in us, as evidenced by the terms of our surrender to Him. He desires all good things for us, He loves us to pieces, for goodness sake! He just wants all of us, every single piece of our soggy, little, rotten tomato hearts. He wants to transform us into His image by the renewing of our minds. (Romans 12:2) Exodus 20:1-26 He is jealous for us! He wants us to have no one and nothing before Him, He should always be first and foremost in our lives.
So in closing, “let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold hast the confession of our hope without wavering for He who promised is faithful. And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.“ -Hebrews 10:22-25
& remember that, “…no chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.”-Hebrews 12:11
John 4:23-24 “But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and in truth.”
1 John 3:24 “Now he who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him. And by this we know that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us.” note: the Spirit whom He has given us. The Spirit is a whom, a being, the Spirit is God. Jesus has given us access to the Spirit, God through His bloodshed.
Philippians 4:7 “…and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”
John 12:49 “For I have not spoken on My own authority; but the Father who sent Me gave Me a command, what I should say and what I should speak.”
